Here are the tests that you must perform on any of the California king comforter sets that you are considering buying:

The Stress Test - Find an edge or a seam and pull on it gently. You want your set to be stitched will and strong, this is what will show whether your California king comforter sets are going to fall apart the very first time they get put into the wash or not.
The Touch Test - Feel the material, stroke it and fondle it well. Just make sure that the material feels good to you. You need to try and imagine what it would be like sleeping on it every single night. See whether it is flowing or stiff. I myself am partial to the soft and supple material but if you like the stiffer kind then go for it.
The Sweat Test - Read the label to see what the material is made up of. This will keep you much cooler at the temperature rises and you start to sweat in the night. Keep in mind that cotton is the perfect material for summer, it is one of the few that actually breathe. You will actually find that your nights are much drier with cotton California king comforter sets.

King Size Mattress

First of all, we do own a king size mattress and second, I didn’t remember showing her our bedroom. Of course, she just couldn’t resist poking her head in our most private retreat to neb around. And of course, she couldn’t stop herself from making an unnecessary comment about the relatively small king size mattress.

When my snippety sister-in-law poked her nosey nose into my bedroom, she exclaimed that there was no way that we had a king size mattress. We all have one of those relatives that make life really, um, interesting. This statement came as a bit of a surprise for two reasons.

I decided to give her a taste of her own medicine. I poked my head in her bedroom but I was pretty disappointed to see a king size mattress that was actually bigger than ours. The next week, we had the uh, pleasure of seeing my nosy sister in law again. This time we were guests in her home.

Actually, I did think that our king size mattress was a little small compared to others. I just didn’t know why. This whole episode made me a little aggravated. A little criticism is one thing but when you attack a person’s sleeping space you have really stepped over the mark.

I was really ready to just go home and plop down on my relatively tiny bed and cry myself to sleep. I decided to do a little research instead. Of course, she led us down her grand hall to make way to her grand bedroom with her freakishly oversized king size mattress.

How could this be, I thought? One king size mattress should be the same size as another, right? I wound up keeping my mouth shut for most of the evening, stewing in my jealous steam when my, err, lovely sister in law suggested that we take a tour of their lovely home. The whole thing made me want to toss dessert. I mean at her head.

Evidently, my sister in law invested in a California king instead of the standard deal. I went online and purchased a California-sized bed for my home. As it turns out, not all king size mattress styles are created equal. I also bought some bed raisers to make the king size mattress stand higher than hers.

Our bed was over ten years old. All this sibling rivalry may seem a little over-the-top but it did come at a good time. We were due for a new one anyway.
